Introduction to the Louvre

A comprehensive tour including several of the Louvre highlights: the Khorsabad Palace, the Victory of Samothrace, the Venus de Milo and Leonardo's Mona Lisa are but the tip of the iceberg, as you delve into the French masters and Italian Renaissance. You'll also learn the history of the Louvre palace itself from the first fortress built by Philip Augustus in the 12th century to the world's most important museum of today.

Discover the Musée d'Orsay

The extensive collections of the Musée d'Orsay (a former railway station) cover the period 1850 to the First World War. You will touch on pre-Impressionist schools such as the Barbizon and Courbet and realism, before moving upstairs to concentrate on Impressionism, dwelling on certain key works, both paintings and sculptures and then finishing with the post Impressionist galleries, that include works by Cezanne, Van Gogh, Matisse, Gauguin and Braque.

Modern art in the Pompidou Center

The Pompidou Centre is home to Europe's largest collection of 20th C art. The tour begins with a discussion of the architecture of the building, designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, and then moves up to the top two floors (fantastic views of Paris!) to enjoy the permanent collection which includes modern masterpieces by Picasso, Braque, Leger, Picabia, Matisse, Dali, Mondrian, to name but a few, where we will delve into a number of 'isms' and discuss the central ideas to each movement.

Marmottan Monet Museum

The Marmottan, unbeknownst to most, houses the largest collection of Monet's in the world and offers a wonderful opportunity to look at his career in its entirety from the cartoons of his youth to the late abstract paintings of Giverny when he was nearly blind. You'll also see the work that gave Impressionism its name - Impression: Soleil Levant, and several works of other impressionists, including a Berthe Morisot gallerys. The museum is housed in a beautiful Empire style mansion and the tour includes a look at the collection of furniture and objects from the Napoleonic era.

Rodin Museum

An exquisite 17th century mansion designed by Gabriel houses the most comprehensive collection of Rodin sculptures. Enjoy learning about his early life and influences before he became successful in his forties and then marvel at some of his most important masterpieces. Delve into the creative process involved in two of his seminal works, the Burghers of Calais and the Gates of Hell that changed our expectations of public monuments. The tour ends with a delightful stroll in the sculpture filled garden and refreshments in the charming café in the garden.
